Different kind of White

Different kind of White

Once upon a time, in the land of Rockford, Illinois, a boy named Virgil Abloh was born. Born in 1980, Virgil was just like any other kid - curious, playful, and with dreams as big as the sky. Little did he know, he was destined to be the wizard of the fashion world!
Virgil started his journey not in fashion but in engineering. Yep, you heard it right! He graduated in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Engineering and fashion? Talk about a combo meal! Later, he decided to add a cherry on top and studied architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and even got Masters's degree.
.
While in college, he dived into the world of DJing and T-shirt printing. He had a hunch—combine words and art, and bam! You got yourself a masterpiece. And that’s how he found his calling. It’s like he found the golden ticket to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, but instead of chocolates, he got clothes!
In 2009, our man Virgil founded RSVP Gallery, a creative blend of art and fashion, illuminating the path for his legendary brand, ‘Off-White’. ‘Off-White’ wasn’t just another brand. It was Virgil’s canvas where he painted his ideas, blending luxury with streetwear and sprinkling it with quotation marks, zip ties, and barricade tapes. He turned ordinary into extraordinary, made people see clothes as conversations, and the fashion world was shaken!
Let’s roll the time dice to 2012. Kanye West (YE) and Virgil embarked on a journey together. Virgil became the Art Director for Kanye’s creative agency, Donda. They were like Batman and Robin, painting the world with their creative juices.

The collaboration between Virgil Abloh and Nike has a story that’s as interesting as the sneakers themselves. Virgil had been a longtime fan of Nike, with a penchant for sketching shoe ideas and sending them to Nike since his teenage years. His passion for design and his innovative approach to fashion were evident. It was his unique vision and the success of his brand, Off-White, that eventually caught the attention of the sneaker giant.

Nike, recognizing Virgil’s rising influence in the fashion world and his ability to blend luxury with streetwear, approached him to collaborate. They handed him a golden ticket—an invitation to re-imagine ten of Nike’s most iconic sneaker models. Virgil was given complete creative freedom, allowing him to deconstruct, reimagine, and infuse each model with his distinctive design elements, ultimately giving birth to “The Ten” collection in 2017. This collaboration wasn’t just a fusion of ideas; it was a harmonious blend of creativity, innovation, and passion, reshaping the dialogue around sneaker culture and fashion.

Fast forward to 2018, and boom! Virgil waved his magical wand and became Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director of Men’s Wear. A black man heading a French luxury fashion house for the first time? Talk about breaking ceilings! He showed the world that the color of one’s skin doesn’t define one’s ability to create and innovate.
Virgil Abloh wasn’t just a designer. He was a philosopher, a storyteller, and a teacher. He changed the way we perceive fashion, pushing boundaries and questioning norms. He was the bridge between the high and the low, the luxe and the street, the ‘us’ and ‘them’.
‘Off-White’ and Louis Vuitton were his playgrounds where he played with materials, forms, and words. With every collection, he told a story, made us think, and left us in awe. It was like he invited us to his world, where every piece was a piece of him, whispering secrets and singing melodies.
Yet, despite the glitz and glamour, Virgil stayed humble. He was a man with a golden heart, full of warmth and passion. He shared his knowledge, inspired young minds, and ignited sparks in the hearts of many. He believed in the power of the youth, the creators of tomorrow, the dreamers of the day. Even after his death he left FREE-GAME on his website on how to create your own brand.
He wasn’t just making clothes; he was shaping minds, painting dreams, and sewing hopes. He made us believe in the impossible, see the unseen, and feel the unfelt. He was the breeze that carried the scent of fresh ideas, the rain that washed away the dust of monotony.
Virgil’s journey was not just a climb to the pinnacle of fashion. It was a dance, a song, a poem written in threads and colors. It was a reminder that dreams do come true and that passion and hard work can break barriers and create wonders.
His passing in 2021 left the world in tears, but his spirit, his ideas, and his stories live on. Virgil Abloh was a comet that crossed our sky, leaving a trail of light that will continue to shine for generations.
In the words of Virgil himself, “Life is so short you can’t waste even a day subscribing to what someone thinks you can do versus knowing what you can do.” So, let’s celebrate his life, his works, his dreams, and continue his legacy by believing in ourselves and pushing the boundaries of our imagination.
And there you have it, the magical story of a boy from Rockford who painted the world with his colors and sewed it with his words. Virgil Abloh, a name that will forever be etched in the hearts of many, a legend that will continue to inspire and live on in the stitches of every fabric and the folds of every garment.
